Build Your Brand Identity, Then A Website

Building a Strong Brand

“Identities are the beginning of everything. They are how something is recognized and understood. What could be better than that?”

PAULA SCHER

Have you ever experienced a record-scratch moment? You know, the rhetorical interruption that symbolizes a sudden change or calls attention to something or someone? It goes something like this: You’re invited to a party but you’re the only one told it’s a costume party. You show up dressed like a Playboy bunny, pink corset, white tail on your butt, bunny ears, the whole nine yards. You walk into the party and WHIRRRRPPPPP. The music stops, everyone at the party pauses mid-drink and all eyes are on you. The only one at the party in a costume. It's not good.

When working with clients, I’ve experienced a few record-scratching moments. Recently, a creative entrepreneur came to me for help with her logo and website design. She felt her current logo and website didn’t reflect her expertise or appeal to her ideal client. Cue the record-scratching moment → After talking about her challenges, she asked if I could do her website first and then come back later and update her logo. In her mind, the website was the most important upgrade that needed to be done in order to attract her ideal clients. Hello, record scratch!

The full potential to stand out, attract ideal clients, and create more revenue lies in having a brand strategy foundation upon which everything else is built.

The thing is, growing a brand and business involves more than just how you look from the outside. Part of working with new clients is having a strategy conversation with you to define your brand mission and goals. There is no doubt the aesthetics of your business could be hindering you from reaching your goals. Logos with conflicting themes, intricate detail, outdated typography, vague design, or just plain ugly can absolutely affect how consumers feel about your brand. But the full potential to stand out, attract the right clients for your business, and create more revenue lies in having a brand strategy foundation upon which everything else is built.

What is a brand identity?

A brand identity is a collection of visuals, such as your logo, colors, typography, and tone of voice that identify and distinguish your brand in consumers’ minds. It helps determine how people perceive the quality and value of your business and it differentiates you from your competition.

Once you have defined your brand message and identity, then you can build out your marketing. Part of that is your online presence, such as your website. Your online presence is the first impression most people have of your brand, making it that much more important to first define your brand message and identity. Then get online with a new or updated website that not only looks great but also connects & clearly communicates through copy and visuals who you are as a business.
